Planning for Print option
NEA Year 2: Planning for print option
Magazine: Front covers and contents pages
A good place
to start is to find a front cover and a contents page that you like the look of
in terms of design and layout. (It does not have to be a lifestyle magazine)
Copy and paste the front cover(s) and contents page into this document as you
can then use them later to create drafts.

Front Cover: Now you need to consider your own
product. What will be the main coverline, remember in term of conventions the
main coverline will be connected to the main image. How many smaller coverlines
do you plan to have. What about the fonts and the colour scheme? You could
create a font and colour scheme palette to help you decide what works well
together. These are things that can be uploaded to your blog in the planning
label. You may well use similar fonts
for each cover, especially for the ‘Masthead’ but you will need to consider a
second colour scheme for issue 2.
Ideas for
Front Cover 1:
Bold font – Dark font. This is because the
main image within the cover will be bright and vibrant.
Colours such as Black, Gold and Bronze will
appear in the magazine they will appear more clearly with a Blue and Green
background. Photos such as lakes and mountains will appear in the front cover.
Image -The main image will be representing
the main topic that will appear in the first couple of pages. The image will also be related to the main
coverline. The smaller coverlines will relate to other lifestyle topics that
will appear in the magazine.
Topics Some of these could be
entertainment, sports and Fashion.
Ideas for
Front Cover 2:
Bold font – Brighter font This is because
Photos covering Fashion will be presented Clothing style will likely to be
Bright and interesting.
Colours such as Blue and bright Green will be
presented. This should stand out with brighter clothing and any accessories
that are involved. This is because Photos covering Fashion will be presented
Clothing style will likely to be Bright and interesting.
Image- The main image will be based on the
Fashion topic . Clothing Brands won’t be presented as the stylised clothes will
provide a variety of Patterns provided with the clothing’s. This will relate
for the coverline. Images relating to the smaller coverlines will be topics
such as Entertainment, Food and Technology.
Topics – Fashion, Food, entertainment and
technology will be topics mentioned on the front cover.
Contents
Pages: Within the industry, ‘contents
pages’ tend to keep the same layout for each issue, it is just the content
itself that is different. Are you planning to have different sections on the
contents page, if so, what will they be and how many will there be? How many
images are you going to have on each contents page? It will make sense to use
similar fonts and colour scheme as on the front cover of each issue. Contents
pages can be tricky as, as the name suggests, they do require a lot of content.
Ideas for
Contents Page 1
4 or 5
contents will be
presented a Brief explanation of the Content will be presented.
An image will be presented for each topic
presented on the content page. So, 5 images overall will be presented
Fonts that were used for the Title and the
smaller coverlines. The Background of the contents page may be White or Grey as
the contents page may be Darker and the images maybe darker
Colours
presented will be a
mixture of brighter and Darker. this depends on the images presented for the
chosen topics. If darker images are presented
the background will likely have brighter colours

page 1
An image will be presented for each topic
presented on the content page. So, 5 images overall will be presented. Again,
the images will be different, but the colour scheme might change compared to
the contents page 1
Fonts will the same as the ones in cover 2.
The fonts used for the title will be used for the title Displaying “Contents”.
The fonts used for the smaller coverlines will also be used
Colours
presented mostly
have a bright colour scheme to suit the colours used on the front cover of the second
magazine. Other colours will depend on the images that taken. The colours used
on the contents page will be based on the images for the contents. Overall
bright and dark colours will be displayed on the contents page.

Once you reach this stage you
can now use the cheat method in ‘Photoshop’ and the front covers and contents
pages you selected earlier to create some drafts. Where possible try and
incorporate your own coverlines and content as well as the font and colours you
plan to use. For drafts you can use images from the internet. Just remember
that these will be going on your blog.

Website: Homepage & Linked Page
If it helps,
as you did with the magazine aspect of the brief, find a website that appeals
to you in terms of design and layout. Again, with your own layout, what
sections will you have on the menu bar. (similar sections to the ones on your
contents page would make sense, but you may choose to have a few extra) Also
begin to think about how you will create an active audience across the website.
You also need to consider fonts and colour scheme and most important, the
number of images you will need. Remember most homepages scroll down, so you may
well need a good selection of images.
Which page
is going to be your linked page? What
content will you need to put on it, will it be more of a written article or
again will it need more images. Can you gauge how many images you are going to
need to fulfil the whole brief.
Homepage
Ideas
The 2
front covers will appear on the homepage along with information about the
magazine. Multiple topics will appear on the website on a bar on the top.
All the
different topics will appear on the front will differently images of the
topics. A caption will be explaining how the topic will be involved within the
magazine.
Linked
page ideas
A
subscription page with prices for different formats of a magazine. Details of the magazine will appear on the
page. Prices of the magazine will also appear on the page
Tips on
lifestyle and a explanation of the lifestyle genre. tips from different
categories which will appear in different magazine covers
Lastly you
now need to give some consideration to the actual photoshoots. These are very
important as both used images across the brief and a selection of unused images
will go in your planning labels. We will create contact sheets in photoshop. This
is also summer homework (where possible) to try and get as many images as you
can. The more images you can take the more choice you have. Remember
they do not all need to be people, they can be locations for a travel
section or items of clothing for a fashion section or photographs
outside a cinema or a club for an entertainment section. It will depend on your plans and own ideas

Additional
summer homework: have a mess about with
WIX, the website builder platform. It will help you to work out some of the
logistics in terms of images and layout you plan to use.
